April: Music, Art, and Fun Times!

April 17th, 2018

So far, April has brought us cold and snow. While spring may be delayed, the residents are still having a grand ol’ time.

Happy Hour with Tony

Tony joined us again for happy hour. He rocked the house with all the tunes we remember growing up to. He brings so much energy, and it’s always a great time when he comes. Judy did a great job helping him the tambourine, while other residents showed off some dance moves.

Spring Flower Boot Vases

Residents painted ceramic boot vases and filled them with spring flowers. There may be snow outside, but we are bringing spring to Shoreview Senior Living! Everyone had their different styles, which added to the creativity of the afternoon. All turned out beautifully!

Children’s Performing Arts

Children’s Performing Arts put on a little show filled with song and dance for residents. They are such talented kids, and we look forward to seeing them in their new theater.

Kitchen Kut Ups

The Kitchen Kut Ups from New Brighton gave us some silly silly songs and laughter. Their instruments were so fun, and their skits were hilarious. The residents truly enjoyed the show. Thank you for bringing a little joy and humor to Shoreview Senior Living.

Basketball

We had a fun basketball competition in Garden Cove. Even one of the caregivers joined in on the action. The residents ended up in the winner’s circle! I think they have been practicing hard. Herb even showed off his muscles after his winning shot.

Happy Hour with Jim and Norton

Jim and Norton joined us for a terrific happy hour with delicious appetizers and cake to celebrate this month’s birthdays! Dancing, singing, and many smiles made this day so special!

Easter Fun!

April 6th, 2018

These past few weeks have been a blast with Easter activities and some music!

Dulcimer

Lori Ronchak visited and played the Hammered Dulcimer during happy hour. It was such a unique and beautiful instrument that her brother made. She was very talented. We also did some sing-a-longs and music trivia on the piano.

Easter Bunny

A group of kids visited residents and made crafts, played games, and got “tattoos.” The Easter bunny hopped on over to celebrate with all the kids! They also had some special treats to take home with them. Thank you to all the residents and volunteers who helped make this a wonderful and successful morning.

Coloring Eggs

Residents went back in time as they remembered decorating their Easter eggs as kids. Four dozen beautiful eggs were completed. Some were painted, some were dipped, and others used tissue paper. We are now ready for deviled eggs! A few residents kept crafting and created a Mod Podge egg or a cross, too!

St. Odilia Kids Visit

Students from St. Odilia School visited Shoreview Senior Living again. They performed skits, sang songs, and made crafts! It was so special seeing the two generations engage with one another. Not only did residents get attention, but Leo loved it as well!! Thank you, Saint Odilia 4th-graders, for spending some quality time with us here at Shoreview!

Yoga & Polka

A little yoga with Nancy and a little polka with Dan made for a wonderful day! The continuous Minnesota snow won’t stop our fun here at Shoreview Senior Living.

Special Visitors | March Activities

March 22nd, 2018

This week at Shoreview Senior Living, we had lovely special visitors who were ready to share their love of music with the residents.

Visit from Saint Odilia

On Tuesday morning, the 4th grade students from Saint Odilia came to spend some time with the residents. Some kids made Easter wreaths for their doors, while others just spent some quality time talking with the residents. It was so special and rewarding. One group even sang “Let It Snow” as it began snowing outside. Father Stiles was visiting the same day for confessions with the residents. Kids thought it was cool to run into him. They were a terrific bunch of students, and we look forward to seeing them next week.

Trudi’s Irish Blessings

Trudi came in on Wednesday afternoon to help us continue celebrating this month’s Irish blessings. Residents sang along with all their favorite tunes and laughed at a few limericks. She even brought Aria, her grandson, with to help run the show.

“School House Rock” Performance

On Wednesday evening, Jill came in with her cast. They performed “School House Rock” for the residents. These kids were filled with talent and did a spectacular job. We are so grateful for the opportunity to have Jill and her crew come and do a rehearsal show before their big night. Thank you Jill for bring us such an amazing show!!

Silverwood Nature Center

March 21st, 2018

Silverwood Nature Center visited us for a session on owls. We learned that owls live to be about 28 years old. They are very quiet in flight because of their frayed feathers. A group of owls is known as a parliament. Owls have tunnel vision, and because of this can turn their heads up to 270 degrees. Some residents experienced this through some nifty glasses made with tennis balls.

Silverwood staff also passed around a plate of what owls eat: mice, fish, grasshoppers, and even other small birds. Leo, the dog, wasn’t quite sure of the Great Horned Owl taxidermy statue or the sounds they played of each of the species. It was so amazing to learn so much about this fascinating bird. In the end, residents created a watercolor owl image to take home. It was a great way to spend the afternoon. Thank you, Silverwood, for joining us!

St. Patrick’s Day 2018

March 19th, 2018

Before our big St Patrick’s day celebration, some residents learned how to play Hand and Foot, while others played a little Farkle. With the room all decked out in green, Bandannaa joined us for a wonderful afternoon with our favorite Irish tunes. The residents enjoyed green margaritas and shamrock punch. Ricardo even brought his spoons and played along to a few of the songs. It’s no Blarney – It was great to see everyone get into the Irish spirit. Thank you to our wonderful leprechauns, Deb and Michelle, for helping make this day a success!

Field Trip: Cosetta’s Italian Market

March 15th, 2018

Residents of Shoreview Senior Living headed down to Cosetta’s Italian Market in St Paul. A wonderful place to go for a bit to eat. Many recall when it used to be just one room back in the early 1900s. Now over 100 years old, it is three stories tall, and the food was terrific! After dining, residents checked out the Italian market and bakery. It was hard not to leave without getting a few treats to take along for later. The sun was quite bright, which made it nice, but not for pictures. From pizza and lasagna to salads and hoagies, everyone had their fill! Thank you, Cosetta’s Italian Market, for a wonderful afternoon!

March Happy Hour with Tony

March 14th, 2018

Tony Garry came to our Friday happy hour and spread a little music to our souls. We caught Laurie dancing in her chair to “Some Kind of Wonderful,” and that she is! Kristy even made everyone do the Chickadee Dance. It’s so much fun when everyone comes together. The day was topped off with a visit from Lexi and her new baby boy, Aiden. So precious and many of the residents got to hold him. A miracle indeed.
